Michigan is called “The Great Lakes State” Growing up in the deep north of Upper Michigan there were hidden lakes and reservoirs tucked away, back roads like secrets that only the locals would know and never, ever boast about. My Father and brothers frequented these gems and occasionally I would join them in their journey to the outskirts across old forgotten logging roads and overgrown trails to find a hidden oasis. One time we even rescued a mallard duck that had been caught in a trap. We wrapped him up in a flannel shirt, appropriately named him Arnold and nursed him back to health. We released him back into the local pond down the road from our home so we could visit. Precious memories of peace and remembering the important things in life are often subtle but real. These pieces hail from a time in my childhood when we did just that.
